Accutane, an acne treatment drug, (isotretinoin) is used to treat severe cases of acne - nodular acne.  Accutane is so powerful that it is only used when all other treatments have failed. Risks associated with taking Accutane to treat acne include birth defects, depression, and abdmoninal issues.

Accutane is widely used; however, it has been in the center of controversy for over 20 years. In November 2004, FDA researcher David Graham included Accutane as one of the 5 drugs that should be studied for withdrawal from the market.

In 1990, due to birth defects from Accutane, Graham had written that the drug "cannot safely be given to women of childbearing age or potential".

In addition to birth defects, a top level Roche associate said in a deposition that Accutane "probably caused" depression in some users. He testified that the FDA and other consultants had reported the rate of depression among Accutane users to be 1.5 times higher than non-Accutane users.

In 1997 Roche's Dr. Peter Schifferdecker recommended that Accutane's U.S. label warn that users "should be supervised for signs of depression during therapy and, if necessary, referred for appropriate treatment." This recommendation was not followed by Roche.
