Bextra is a prescription pain drug prescribed for the treatment of osteoarthritis and adult rheumatoid arthritis.
A recent study showed that the incidence of heart attacks and strokes among Bextra patients was more than double that of patients taking a placebo, in this case sugar pills.
In December 2004, the FDA announced that Bextra will come with a new warning about possible heart and blood clotting problems when the drug is used by patients who have just had heart bypass surgery.
According to the FDA, in a study of more than 1,500 heart surgery patients, those taking Bextra for pain were more likely to have heart attacks, strokes, and blood clots in the legs or lungs.
In addition, the new Bextra label will also include a "black box" warning about the possibility of serious skin reactions. Bextra has been linked to Stevens Johnson Syndrome - a rare, potenitally fatal skin disease.
