Fosamax is a bisphosphonate drug used to treat osteoporosis .
Recently a connection was found that links Fosamax use to a serious bone disease called Osteonecrosis of the Jaw (ONJ). ONJ is also known as Dead Jaw or rotting of the jaw.
This condition causes the loss or breakdown of the jaw bone.
This finding was published in the Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, and it prompted the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the manufacturer of Fosamax to issue a warning to health care professionals on September 24, 2004.
