Compartment syndrome occurs when extreme pressure builds within the muscles preventing nourishment - oxygen and nutrients - from reaching nerve and muscle cells. Without nourishment, nerve and muscle cells begin to die. If the pressure is not relieved quickly, paralysis, loss of limb or loss of life may result.
