Citing poor sales, Bristol-Myers Squibb announced that it would stop selling its antidepressant drug Serzone in the United States as of June 14, 2004. However, Bristol-Myers Squibb is not recalling Serzone.

"The company will be able to fill (or refill) prescriptions for many more months after June 14, because the drug will still be available in channels of commerce including wholesalers and retail pharmacies," stated Public Citizen, a consumer advocacy group.

The drug had previously been removed from all countries except the U.S. In January 2003, Serzone was removed from the European market because it has been linked to 26 deaths from liver damage.

Serzone was approved for the treatment of depression by the FDA in 1994. It is included in the list of 10 antidepressant drugs required to carry black-box warnings about an increased risk of suicidal behavior in teens and children.
